This scheme of work consists of four packs of resources which have been designed to introduce students to the concept of democracy.

Introduction to Democracy Part 1 - What is Democracy?

The first of a four-part set which has been designed to introduce students to the concept of democracy. Each of the packs can be delivered independently of each other, or combined together to form a broader scheme of work.

Students consider what a democracy is, why it is important and how it impacts their day-to-day lives. Through taking part students will be able to answer key questions such as:

What does democracy mean?
What are the key features of a democratic country?
How has democracy evolved throughout history and how might it continue to evolve?
What are the key features of UK Parliament?
How does Parliament differ from the Government?

Introduction to Democracy Part 2 - Voting and the General Election

The second of a four-part set which has been designed to introduce students to the concept of democracy. Each pack can be delivered independently of each other, or combined together to form a broader scheme of work.

Students consider the democratic process of voting, what happens during a general election and what the barriers and solutions are in relation to young people voting. Through taking part students will be able to answer key questions such as:

What is a general election?
How do people vote?
Why should people vote?
What are the barriers that stop young people from voting?
How can these barriers be overcome?

The third of a four-part set which has been designed to introduce students to the concept of democracy. Each pack can be delivered independently of each other, or combined together to form a broader scheme of work.

Students explore the difference between local and central government. Through taking part students will be able to answer key questions such as:

What are the key functions and roles of local and central government?
What are the key differences between local and central government?
How do local governments make and spend money?
How can young people make their voices heard amongst local decision makers?

The purpose of manifestos.
The role and responsibilities of an MP.
What priorities they would have if they were to form a political party.
